4 Reasons to Upgrade to Digital Commercial Surveillance Solutions

Digital Technology Has Significant Advantages over Analog

As you know, almost all audio, video, and communication technologies have moved to digital formats and platforms. Decades in the making, there are many reasons for this, a major one being that digital technology has spawned innovations in gathering and processing vast amounts of information. Commercial surveillance is no exception, and if you haven't moved to digital solutions in your Las Vegas, NV, organization, now it's a perfect time to do so. Learn why below.

Simplified Installations

Older analog closed-circuit TV cameras (CCTV) require two wires to operate; one for power and a coaxial cable for transmitting video images. Modern surveillance cameras based on IP network technology can utilize one ethernet cable, which handles both power and data transmission on a single cable. Ethernet cable is a simple, low-voltage wiring solution that is easy to install everywhere. In addition, the cameras support standard digital video formats that require no conversions to be viewed on devices like PCs, tablets, and smartphones.

Easier Information Storage and Processing

Digital video formats can use advanced compression techniques to utilize network bandwidth and data storage efficiently. Digital formats are also searchable and much easier to process using AI and machine learning technology. It's the same essential technology that allows you to search for "dogs" on the photos in your smartphone and find matching pictures.

Enhanced Security

Despite the misconception that digital technology has inherent security issues, the reality is that a well-managed system with properly applied encryption and safeguards is more secure than an analog solution. Cybersecurity is always an issue in the digital world, but that risk can be minimized with the correct security practices. Further, in a digital model, it's much easier to remotely shut down or decommission a camera or viewing device that might be compromised.

Centralized Management and Scalability

IP-based surveillance systems are much easier to manage and scale. You have the option of storing video footage locally on a network video recorder (NVR) or in the cloud. Many organizations use a hybrid approach, keeping footage on premises but using cloud connectivity to share incident or monitoring footage. With centralized management, any compromised devices like cameras or viewing applications can be taken down if they appear to be compromised. Centralized management can monitor camera and network health, diagnose issues, and remotely update software and firmware to fix problems or add new features. Central control and remote monitoring make it far easier to scale a system in an organized fashion, requiring fewer physical resources to maintain the surveillance system and monitor many more cameras and locations.
